Day 2:
Today in Language Arts I taught my students about
the setting of a story. I began
the lesson by asking them what they knew about a setting. The students first off said that the
setting is the place a story takes place.
It took them a little while to think about the time a story takes place
as well. When I prompted my
students and asked them what the other part of the setting is they got the
answer. I also asked the students
if the setting of a story has to be real.
They right away said no, and then I asked them to name some stories that
have made up settings. The students
brought up Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, etc. We had a short discussion on Neverland in Peter Pan and how
it is made up. After the
questioning/discussion I had the students participate in an activity. I had two books with very distinct
settings that the students read. I
broke the students up into a group of three and a group of two. The students took turns reading the
book, and they filled out a worksheet while they were working about the time,
place, and environment of the story.
The students worked well during this part, but there were a couple of
times I found myself redirecting the students back to the books. At the end of class I had the students
come up with a setting for their own books. I had one student who did not want to work, and when I would
go over and help him he told me that he did not know what to write and that he
was stupid. I helped this student
get on track and asked him some questions that helped him come up with a great
setting for his story. Today went
well again. I am just nervous that
the students will not have enough time to write their stories the rest of the
week.
